What to check before dispatch
The percentage alone does not show profitability. A profitable backhaul can justify repositioning, while short empty moves may be operationally necessary.
Worked example
120 empty km plus 600 loaded km gives 720 total km; 120 ÷ 720 × 100 = 16.7% deadhead.
Common mistake
Do not divide empty kilometres only by loaded kilometres. 120 ÷ 600 is 20%, but deadhead share of total distance is 16.7%.
